Kushiel series
I just finished reading the last book of the Kushiel series by Jacqueline Carey. One word: awesome!
The setting in this six-book series is an alternate medieval Europe, where magic exists and gods are real. The first trilogy chronicles the adventures of a young woman named Phedre, whose left eye bears the scarlet mark of Kushiel, the god of justice. Born into poverty, she is adopted by a nobleman and taught the arts of covertcy and politics. She and her companion Joscelin, a trained warrior, embark on perilous journeys to save the missing Prince of the realm from the horrors of a warlord's torture chamber.
The second trilogy takes place some years later, and follows the adventures of the now-adult Prince. He has fallen in love with the Queens eldest daughter, a romance which is forbidden. To prove his worth to the Queen he must travel far and wide, seek justice in Kushiel's name, and submit to strange magics in order to win his girl. All in the name of the gods' highest precept: Love as thou wilt.
