Listing the lists of the best 10 sci-fi films of the decade

Moon - Sam RockwellIt's that time of the year and that time of the decade that journalists start filing their year's best and decade's best lists so there's something to fill the pages of the newspapers and websites while they are on vacation between Christmas and New Year's Day. I like to call it coma journalism. Those editions of the newspaper are perfect for people who have just come out of a long coma and need to catch up on what's happened while they were unconscious. For the rest of us, it's like reading a re-run of the news.

John Scalzi took a look back on the winners and losers in sci-fi cinema over the past 10 years. He's got some interesting choices and the readers' comments offer you more if you don't agree with his list. He's also got a list of the worst sci-fi movies of the last decade, just in case you missed the other column.

Here's another list of the decade's best SF films. There is some overlap with Scalzi's choices, but not that much. I suspect as you read more of these lists in the coming weeks, you'll see just about every major science fiction movie mentioned at least once by somebody.

Wired polled its readers for their faves of the decade. It's mostly predictable, but there are some oddballs in there. Compare that to their favourites from the 50s and earlier.

While we're busy perusing movie lists, here are a few more to consider. How about the top 10 sci-fi remakes? It's a pretty arbitrary list. How is The Island one of the best remakes ever?

Then there's this list of the 10 best second-in-commands. And finally a list of the best movies based on science fiction short stories. It's often been said that short stories are the best sources for adaptations because you don't have to worry about cutting out too much when it comes time to translate it to film.

So what are your favourite, or least favourite, science fiction movies of the 00's? The top of my list would be Moon, followed closely by Primer.

Added a movie poll

In case you missed it, I changed the poll in the right margin to ask you for your pick for the decade's best science fiction movie.
